Rotoscoping

After this research

Now I've explored this I want to make sure I'm certain this is a good idea to continue with this element of the video. While contacting Blythe he was also uncertain what this would look like so I decided to sort this problem out and moved on to create a short Rotoscope DEMO edited slightly in beat with Blyth's song. I decided to include my previous rotoscope demo so Blythe could see what possible with the rotoscoping

Feedback and tutorial

I found a really good YouTube tutorial that helped me to create this demo. Blythe really liked the effects and currently really likes the idea I received this after sending it to him through snap chat.

Conclusion

This DEMO was really useful for me as it helped me understand how long this would take and the quality of my animation. It took me 1 hour to do the first shot of the rain clouds and heart behind my character. It was my first attempt and it was a good practice for me and helped me create a better animation in the second shot.

The second shot being better and simpler with less going on but more about the quality.  This second attempt was quicker due to me being more confident from the first shot and knowing what I wanted to animate before the shooting . This shot took about 30 mins but more minimal. It definitely helped me understand the time frames for each animation considering there size

I Put a short edit together to show Blythe it included my first rotoscoping demo in year 1 and the rotoscopes animated specifically  for this project. He likes them and wants to keep the idea going but wants it to be of a higher smoother quality. So I have decided once a week to practice for half an hour/hour rotoscoping in preparation for post production

I need to take into consideration the length of the animation and what I'm animating when in pre production as I asked a class mate what they thought about the short demo and the parts i animated recently and they think that its better with one animation subject on the screen at a time rather than multiple and it works well.

I believe this animation style has a good charm and makes the video more engaging and more unique. It also helps to drive the viewer through the story.

Colour Correction

Research Purpose

After receiving Blythe's project brief he wants the colour correction to make colours pop out.

So I decided to look into this and by the end understand basic colour correction and some ideas about how I could colour correct the video

Conclusion

This was a really useful piece of research, especially learning about the scopes and how to use them it defiantly given me more confidence in colour correction but I'm worried how this might affect my rotoscoping colours, especially making it more vintage so I'm leaning toward away from that more but I'm going to make a final decision after I have completed the DEMO.

I plan to use the clips i animted over see the overall effect of the colour correction

Colour Correction DEMO

I found a good tutorial in the slides and followed the video step by step in my DEMO edit.

The video is linked in the player

What I learned

This was really useful I am now very confident in colour correction and I feel now I can colour correct confidently on my project I also think that making a certain colour pop , over a vintage colour grade will be more in line with what Blythe wants his video to look like.

The DEMO took about 30 mins and now that I know what to do and how to do and what I want to do in terms of colour grading. I feel I will be quicker in the post production stage.

I really like how the animation in the eyes turned out. I made it more red and turned up the saturation with gives it a really nice glowing effect which I want to try to continue with through my video.

Feedback

I sent the Demo to Blythe as he requested and he gave me feedback. He liked the first shots colours and how they popped out. He let me know he is feeling more confident in the project. I feel this feedback has helped me understand how he wants colours to pop. I still want to try and make the Animations glow on the screen as well as colour correcting other colours.

What next?

I now know how to colour correct but I believe that in order for it to be consistent I want to think about what 3 colours I want to run through the theme of the project so i can link these colours to outfits and locations.

Cinematography

Initial Conclusion

After completing a initial look at cinematography for my project. Its given me a lot creativity for the project and shot ideas. This was really useful to get creative and think about how the video wold look and feel. Start to think about camera movement etc.

Continuity

What is it

Continuity is In the film, continuity is the notion that a sequence of shots all need to feel as unified and fluid as if they were a single shot. If a director chooses to cut from one shot to another, audiences should feel like nothing has changed in terms of time and space.

I believe that if I take continuity into consideration as my video will be a story will be very important to not turn viewers away or confuse them. For example, the same outfits for the same place and time.

Editing Montage

Intial Conclusion

Initially I didn't think much about having a montage element in my product but I think it could be really useful to tell the time apart from Blyhte and his love interest. It gave me the idea to do a montage of him hanging out with mates and going to parties for example while having shots of time while the time goes by maybe showed by a clock.

I also know more about montage and can use this editing theory as its quite similar to music and will us the editing techniques in my edit for the video as a whole

Production Techniques Conclusion

What was useful?

This stage gave me more ideas and smoothed out concerns about animation and colour correction. This stage gave me more confidence in the logistics of the product. Looking to shots and cinematography was really useful and fun for me. It gave me more awareness of what I should take into consideration. It definitely will help think more about how this will be more a short film than a music video.

What was the most useful in this stage?

I found colour correction to be the most useful. In this project Blyhte really wants colours to pop out and if this is to make Blyhte happy with the product I needed to look into colour correction and feel like I have the best technique to make the colours pop the best way to impress Blyhte. It also gave me an idea to boost the saturation of the rotoscoping to create a glowing effect on the animation.

What has changed or adapted about my idea?

This hasn't changed my idea but I feel I need to think more about what I'm rotoscoping and create some test animations to see what I'm capable of . I think the best time to do this would be when in pre production and planning out the shots with animation and pick a shot and try to make the animation before the production stage to avoid this being a problem in post.
